Propecia effects and price

Propecia is a brand name for Finasteride, an anti androgen drug. An anti androgen or androgen antagonist drug is capable of preventing or inhibiting the biological effects of androgens, male sex hormones produced by the testes. Finasteride inhibits type II 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT or dihydrotestosterone. DHT is an androgen and three times more potent than testosterone. While DHT is crucial for mitigating the effects of estrogens (female sex hormones), it is also known to be the major cause for prostate problems and male pattern baldness. Since Finasteride inhibits the action of DHT, it is used for treating and halting the progress of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer and androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness. It was approved by the FDA in 1997 as a prescription drug for hair loss treatment. The brand is owned by Merck.

The patent of Finasteride has expired and you can get generic Propecia at a discounted price. Independent studies report that in 48% of the cases Finasteride resulted in some regrowth of hair. In 42% of the cases hair loss was stopped. Finasteride treatment is a long term therapy. The effects continue for as long as you keep taking the drug. Once stopped the hair gained or maintained are lost within six to twelve months. Finasteride has also been shown to be ineffective in treating hair loss in women. Moreover, women should take it only if they do not plan to get pregnant and that too on the advice of a doctor.

While Propecia effects on hair growth are positive unlike the other FDA approved drug, Minoxidil. Minoxidil is a vasodilator used to treat severe hypertension. One side effect is excessive hairiness so it is also sold as a treatment for male-patterned baldness. Finasteride like Minoxidil works on both the crown area and hairline.

Like all allopathic medications, Finasteride too has side effects. Propecia side effects include erectile dysfunction and in some instances, enlargement of the breast gland. Since it has a short half life of six to eight hours, in trial studies the side effects were seen to cease after discontinuation of the drug.

Propecia price is often a consideration since it has to be taken over long periods. Since the expiry of the patent, generic versions are widely available at a much lesser cost. Generic versions are the exact copy of the branded drug and contain the same active ingredient, Finasteride in this case.

Finasteride is a prescription drug and available only against an eligible prescription. It is available in 1mg. The FDA has been petitioned to review the dosage and reduce it to one fourth due to the long tern effects of the drug. Propecia is a once in a day drug and meant for men only.

Hair restoration surgery cost - Medical hair restoration

Check out useful info about hair restoration surgery. Learn how medical hair restoration works, compare average hair restoration cost and laser hair restoration too.

Medical hair restoration surgery

Hair restoration is much more problematic than preventing hair loss. But the fact of life is that more than fifty percent of men worldwide develop male pattern baldness. Hair loss treatment is a $1 billion industry in the US alone. Research has firmly established the role played by dihydrotestosterone or DHT in baldness. DHT is actively involved in metabolism of testosterone and is formed in testes adrenal glands and hair follicles. Medical treatment for hair loss is presently targeted at preventing the hormone to from acting on the cellular structure of the scalp. Minoxidil and Finasteride are the only two FDA approved drugs for treating hair loss. While Finasteride has a positive effect, Minoxidil is used mainly for its side effect. Minoxidil was initially used to lower high blood pressure. It was discovered that it had a side effect; it could reverse or slow down the processes that cause baldness. That led to the development of topical solutions for treatment of hair loss.

There are instances when medications fail to result is desired hair regrowth and hair transplants may be the only option to restore lost hair. Surgical hair restoration cost is on the higher side. Depending upon the number of grafts that you need it could cost anything between $4,000 and $20,000. On an average, the cost may vary between $3 and $10 per graft, excluding extra medication, blood tests, and anesthesia and facility costs. There is more than one technique that the doctor may use but the most common are laser grafting or follicle unit extraction.

Laser hair restoration is a technique by which graft receptor sites are made with a laser. Although laser treatments are normally associated with latest technologies, many surgeons fail to find and specific advantages of this technique. Laser grafting has a disadvantage that it may scar the scalp as well as scar under the skin.

Medical hair restoration with Monoxidil is inexpensive and available over the counter. However, it has its disadvantages. It has to be applied daily for 6 weeks and is a slow process. Biggest disadvantage is that regrowth is rare. Non medical treatments like a hair piece look unnatural and are expensive.

The most common hair restoration surgery is follicular unit extraction. It is a transplant procedure that involves taking hair from the back or sides of the head and placing them on the balding areas. The extracted hairs, called grafts, are transplanted in tiny slits created by the surgeon on the balding areas.

Hair transplantation is intended to permanently cure male pattern baldness. It is a surgical procedure and should be performed only by specialist surgeons. A local or general anesthesia is used and a single session may last six hours. Bandaging the head may be necessary. Although surgical hair restoration is expensive it has the best success rates till date.

Hair pulling - Stop hair pulling disorder - Pullling out hair

Discover how hair pulling is related to alopecia. Stop hair pulling disorder and prevent a premature loss of hair due to pulling out hair.

Stop hair pulling disorder

Hair pulling is one of the causes of alopecia or hair loss. Let us first understand hair growth. Prior to hair growth there is formation of the follicle. Hair follicle is that part of the skin that grows hair by packing old cells together. Hair grows in cycles of three phases. The anagen phase is the growth phase, catagen is the regressing phase and telogen is the resting phase. There is also a shedding phase which is known as exogen which is independent of the resting and regressive phases. At any given point of time up to 90% hair in a healthy scalp are in the growth phase, 10-14% in resting phase and the rest in regressive phase. Fifty to hundred club hairs fall each day from a normal scalp. Alopecia or hair loss is a condition in which fewer hairs grow than are shed. There are two conditions that fall under the category of pulling hair as a cause of alopecia. Pulling hair may be voluntary or involuntary.

Voluntary pulling is mostly due to inappropriate hairstyles like excessively tight ponytails or braids. It also includes the use of hot hair irons used to change the structure of hair. Involuntary hair removal may also be due to burns caused by hair relaxers containing substances that can destroy hair. Involuntary pulling hair is primarily a psychological hair pulling disorder marked by an impulsive compulsion of pulling one’s hair. Medically termed as trichotillomania or trichotillosis it is still doubtful as to how it should be classified. At times it seems like a habit or an addiction or a tic problem and sometimes as an impulse control disorder. People with trichotillomania live normal lives but may have bald patches on their head.

Trichotillomania is seen in all age groups but more common in the first twenty years and more common in children between 9 and 14 years. Both genders are equally vulnerable. Just like any other psychological problem, treatment to stop hair pulling involves the use of drugs like antidepressants including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs.

Pulling out hair may just be casual. Many people get the urge to pull out single hair and use it as a dental floss. Some people may also form the habit of eating the pulled hair, a condition called trichophagia. Severe trichophagia causes severe pain and may require surgery.

Behavioral treatment involving awareness and relaxation training is another mode of treating for compulsive hair pulling. Behavioral treatment of trichotillomania is similar to treatment of behavioral disorders like nail biting, thumb sucking and skin picking. Also known as habit reversal training, it is an accepted and tolerable treatment.

Since the area becomes agitated it intensifies the feeling, which results in an obsession to pull. If not treated the bald patches may grow rapidly. Excessive hair pulling can also affect self confidence and a person’s ability to function normally and also associated with depression.

Concerned about scalp ringworm? Learn more about ringworm of the scalp, learn the common scalp ringworm treatment and consequences.

Scalp ringworm treatment

Scalp ringworm is a fungal infection of the scalp. It is mostly seen in children before they reach puberty. Although uncommon in adults it does affect a small percentage of the adult population every year. The medical term for ringworm is tinea and when it occurs on the scalp it is known as tinea capitis. The condition is characterized by bald patches and may be accompanied by inflammation, scaling and pustules. Ringworm can be very itchy as well. Tinea capitis is caused by a skin fungus known as dermatophytes and you get infected if you come in direct contact with a person already infected. The skin fungus can be transmitted between two individuals on sharing a towel, hair brush or comb, bedding, clothing or a cap. Primary symptoms of the disease are a thickened scaly skin, soft and watery swellings and raised red rings. In areas where the fungus is deep rooted in the scalp it causes severe itching, dandruff and patches of hair loss. Since symptoms and appearance is like most skin diseases including psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis, a confirmed diagnosis is possible only on microscopic examination and microbial culture of hair.

You would need to consult a doctor only very severe presentation of ringworm of scalp because getting rid of mild instances is not very difficult. Dermatologists prefer oral treatment by griseofulvin, a kind of penicillin which inhibits growth or reproduction of fungi. Most anti fungus drugs for treating skin diseases are used topically and applied directly to the affected area. Griseofulvin however has to be taken orally for six weeks to be effective. You may also look up over the counter shampoos containing selenium sulfide. You can also prevent occurrence through good hygiene. Since tinea capitis may also occur in animals, avoid contact with animals with visible signs of infection.

The fungus species responsible for ringworm on scalp varies according to the geographical areas. Excessive use of griseofulvin has led to its spread because it is more effective against on type of tinea capitis. Although direct contact is a greater risk, infection through objects leads to a wider spread.

Over eight species of the fungus dermatophytes are commonly associated with ringworm of the scalp. The reason that it occurs mostly in children is due to poor hygiene, excessive contact with pets and tendency of children to share each other’s apparel especially caps.

Scalp ringworm treatment with appropriate medication is effective in most of the cases. In absence of treatment the disease can exacerbate very fast and lead to formation of pustules and painful nodules. It may also spread to the neck and face and also infect other people more easily.

If you are particular about hygiene there is no reason why you should contact tinea capitis. However, it normally presents as a mild condition in its initial stage. That is the time to address the issue. Use appropriate topical treatment for scalp ringworm if you want to avoid oral medication.

Check out useful information about hair regrowth treatment. Learn about hair regrowth for men, hair regrowth products and hair regrowth for women as well.

Hair regrowth treatment and products

Seeking hair regrowth is a matter of sifting fact from fiction. While hair restoration is a surgical procedure there are also many products available that involve scalp medication and natural remedies. Hair surgeries involve follicular unit transplantation. Health hair follicles are removed from the back of the head where hairs tend to be more permanent. These are then transplanted on areas where there is no here. The original site from where hair follicles are removed is stitched and usually there is no visible scar. However, the most commonly used treatment for hair loss or alopecia is either oral medication or hair growth shampoos. Mediation does not work for most people because hair loss is more of a genetic and lifestyle problem. A common form of hair loss is androgenic alopecia or what is commonly termed as male pattern baldness. It occurs in men as well as women. The hair loss is in a typical pattern beginning above both temples. It gradually progresses and takes a characteristic M shape. The hairline recedes and the hair at the crown of the head start thinning eventually leading to total baldness or just a rim of hair on the sides and the back of the head.

Hair regrowth for men is a bigger problem than in women. Hair loss in males is visible between 18-35 years. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an active metabolite of testosterone, which is a potent androgenic hormone produced chiefly by the testes and responsible for the development of male secondary sex characteristics. Male pattern baldness is primarily due to increase o f DHT in the scalp, which is caused by a reaction between 5-Alpha Reductase and testosterone. The genetic sensitiveness of hair follicles to DHT shortens their life and they stop producing new hair. Most people learn to live hair loss but there are ways to treat baldness. Medication for hair loss is usually done with minoxidil, which is actually meant for treating hypertension but has hair growth as a side effect. Topical caffeine may also be used while some alpha reductase inhibitors are still not approved by FDA.

Minoxidil is available over the counter and is also used for hair regrowth for women. However, it is used for its side effects and may not be the correct treatment for all. There is a strong connection between diet and lifestyle and hair loss.

The most common hair regrowth products are shampoos. While these may be effective in preventing hair loss in many cases they ineffective for re-growing hair over bald spots. At the most they are effective in cases of mild hair loss.

Hair loss is a frustrating problem especially in a young age. Before you start looking for products for treating hair loss it is imperative that you study their effectiveness. Hair loss due to genetic predisposition may require surgeries. You may also look up some natural hair regrowth treatments.

Hair Transplant Surgery - Hair Transplants cost - Best Hair Transplant

Curious about hair transplant surgery? Learn about hair transplants, average hair transplant cost and how to choose the best hair transplant for you.

Hair transplant surgery

For those who are unable accept baldness, hair transplant may probably be the only solution. Baldness or alopecia is loss of hair in the areas where it normally grows, particularly on the scalp. The most common is progressive thinning of hair and is a common problem. Many times it is apparent in between the age of 18-35 years starting with hair loss on the temples and gradually to a state where only a rim of hair is visible on the back of the head. This is known as male or female pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia. Alopecia areata is patchy baldness involving hair loss in some parts of the head. Total baldness is known as alopecia totlais and the severest form where there is loss of hair from the head and the body is known as alopecia universalis. A major cause of alopecia is a genetic disposition but may also be due to other reasons. Traction alopecia is common in people with hairstyles that involve pulling hair tightly. Hair loss may also be due to infection or medical conditions like hypothyroidism or side effect of cancer treatment. While baldness in elderly is associated with testosterone levels premature baldness is largely linked to X chromosome. Treatment in either case is a matter of choice since baldness can alter appearances and can indeed be frustrating.

Hair growth occurs in a cycle and for that it is imperative that hair follicles are in good shape. It is much easier to prevent hair loss than to re-grow hair in dead follicles. Some hair re-growth products like finasteride, minoxidil and ketoconazole have proven rates of success. Hair transplants are probably the last option that people have in mind.

Most common treatment for hair loss is medication or medicated shampoos. Opting for transplantation is usually an internal debate of whether you need it or want it. Most people learn to live with it. Moreover hair transplant cost is high and since baldness is not considered as a disease it is not on the agenda of government and private funds and health insurance plans.

Transplantation involves removing hair from areas where hair is stronger, usually the back of the head, and transplanting it in areas where there are no hair. The donor area is stitched back and is not visible. Transplanting hair surgeries have undergone a lot of change and the transplanted hairs look almost similar. Apparently a simple surgery but choosing the best hair transplant may not be that easy.

A new surgery for transplantation of hair is under development that involves transplantation of entire patches of scalp to bald areas. Since it has still to be refined it may not be advisable to go for it. Hair transplant is a long process and also costly but may be the only option available to you if medication and other forms of treatment fail to work.

Discover useful information about male pattern baldness. Learn all about baldness and why are bald spots related to this disease.

Male pattern baldness

Baldness is the common type of hair loss that develops in most men at some stage. It usually takes 15-25 years to go bald. However, some men go bald in less than 5 years. Typically, at first the hair begins to recede at the front. At the same time, the hair usually becomes thin on the top of the head. A bald patch gradually develops in the middle of the scalp. The receding front and the bald patch on the top gradually enlarge and join together. A rim of hair is often left around the back and sides of the scalp. In some men, this rim of hair also thins and goes to leave a completely bald scalp. This is not a rule but is really common that the pattern happen in the majority of the situations nearly all men have some bald by the time they are in their 60s. However, the age the hair loss starts is variable. About three in ten 30 year olds and half of 50 year olds are quite bald. Some women also develop a similar pattern of hair loss. Of course you know that this situation happen with the females too. Hair is made in hair follicles which are like tiny pouches just under the skin surface. A hair normally grows from each follicle for about 3 years. It is then shed, and a new hair grows from the follicle. This cycle of hair growth, shedding, and new growth goes on throughout life. Remember that is necessary that you have control and to understand the situation and that looking for a professional help.

Baldness is possible that some of the most common patter cause this situation are or some fact that occur in men as they become bald like, affected hair follicles on scalp gradually become smaller than normal or follicle shrinks, each new hair is thinner than the previous one. Before falling out, each new hair grows for much less time than the normal 3 years or so. Eventually, remains are a much smaller hair follicle and you know what happen too.

Bald spot is a condition affecting humans, in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Because it causes the spots on the scalp, especially in the first stages, it is sometimes called spot too. In 1%-2% of cases, the condition can spread to the entire scalp (Alopecia totalis) or to the entire epidermis (Alopecia universalis). Conditions resembling AA, and having a similar cause, occur also in other species of course.

To become gradually bald is a normal part of the ageing process for most men. No treatment is wanted or needed by most affected men. For some men, bald can be distressing, particularly if it is excessive or occurs early in life. Treatment may then help. But of course that you need professional information and that your doctor can check your situation. You can use many good products and obtain a good result in a few time of baldness problem.
