For those who are unable accept baldness, hair transplant may probably be the only solution. Baldness or alopecia is loss of hair in the areas where it normally grows, particularly on the scalp. The most common is progressive thinning of hair and is a common problem. Many times it is apparent in between the age of 18-35 years starting with hair loss on the temples and gradually to a state where only a rim of hair is visible on the back of the head. This is known as male or female pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia. Alopecia areata is patchy baldness involving hair loss in some parts of the head. Total baldness is known as alopecia totlais and the severest form where there is loss of hair from the head and the body is known as alopecia universalis. A major cause of alopecia is a genetic disposition but may also be due to other reasons. Traction alopecia is common in people with hairstyles that involve pulling hair tightly. Hair loss may also be due to infection or medical conditions like hypothyroidism or side effect of cancer treatment. While baldness in elderly is associated with testosterone levels premature baldness is largely linked to X chromosome. Treatment in either case is a matter of choice since baldness can alter appearances and can indeed be frustrating.

Hair growth occurs in a cycle and for that it is imperative that hair follicles are in good shape. It is much easier to prevent hair loss than to re-grow hair in dead follicles. Some hair re-growth products like finasteride, minoxidil and ketoconazole have proven rates of success. Hair transplants are probably the last option that people have in mind.

Most common treatment for hair loss is medication or medicated shampoos. Opting for transplantation is usually an internal debate of whether you need it or want it. Most people learn to live with it. Moreover hair transplant cost is high and since baldness is not considered as a disease it is not on the agenda of government and private funds and health insurance plans.

Transplantation involves removing hair from areas where hair is stronger, usually the back of the head, and transplanting it in areas where there are no hair. The donor area is stitched back and is not visible. Transplanting hair surgeries have undergone a lot of change and the transplanted hairs look almost similar. Apparently a simple surgery but choosing the best hair transplant may not be that easy.

A new surgery for transplantation of hair is under development that involves transplantation of entire patches of scalp to bald areas. Since it has still to be refined it may not be advisable to go for it. Hair transplant is a long process and also costly but may be the only option available to you if medication and other forms of treatment fail to work.
